Although the recreational resources are well-known and enjoyed, some might wonder at the paucity of services available.
Because of the philanthropic tendencies of a family named Worthington, and the accidents of history that created the National Recreation Area here, the confluence of water and earth at the Delaware Water Gap promises hikers a bounty of blissful steps through exquisite terrain. The view from Indian Head atop Mt. Tammany at the point of the Gap overlooking the Delaware River. Once a family estate, Worthington State Forest comprises almost 6, acres extending about seven miles along the Kittatinny Ridge.

The area was originally settled by a Welsh Quaker named John Roberts “the miller” who purchased the rights to acres of land in the Welsh Tract in Taking title to acres; he set up his grist mill called “The Wain” by or earlier. In the Mill Creek Historic District there are some noteworthy examples of vernacular architecture of the 18th century in a rural setting, all of which belonged to the Roberts family’s milling industry.
The houses that John Roberts, his son and grandson all of the same name built were several millworkers’ houses and the former mill store, in use since the ‘s. Other features of the Mill Creek Historic District are 3 mill ruins, a dam, an old fording place rebuilt on the Creek, and a Penn ten-mile road marker of Fourteen property owners are represented in the original documented Mill Creek Historic District and no intrusions.
There are a total of 6 houses of which 5 date from the 18th century although one is altered on the exterior and the lone 20th century house is not visible from the road. The building material used in this district is locally quarried stone. Two of the houses and Old Gulph Road are of stucco over stone.

Susquehannock The area around present-day Columbia was originally populated by Native American tribes, most notably the Susquehannocks , who migrated to the area between and [ citation needed ] after separating[ citation needed ] from the Iroquois Confederacy. They established villages just south of Columbia, in what is now Washington Boro [ citation needed ], as well as claiming at least hunting lands as far south as Maryland and Northern Virginia.
The French ran across them in the area around Buffalo, apparently visiting the Wenro , and suggesting their numbers were far greater. The Province of Maryland fought a declared war for nearly a decade, signing a peace in , against the Susquehannock Confederation who were allied to New Sweden and furnishing fire arms to the Susquehannocks in exchange for furs. By they were beset on all sides  —with attacks from colonial settlers, raids from the weakened Iroquois and the long subjugated Lenape band occupying the Poconos and Lehigh Valley.
In that decade, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and New York all claimed the Susquehannock lands of the Wyoming Valley , where the remnants of the nation were to recoil into a few scant under populated towns. In , the Governor of New York would sign a treaty with the League of the Iroquois requiring them to take in the Susquehannocks. The Iroquoian cultures universally supporting adoption, absorbed the people. Small bands moved west across the Susquehanna to new villages such as Conestoga Town and some are believed to have trekked through the gaps of the Allegheny to the virtually empty lands beyond the Alleghenies , perhaps mingling there with other Iroquoian peoples such as the Seneca , Wenro and Erie peoples forming the new clans and towns as the new Mingo people whose small bands known to be present in Western Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio in the early s.
Wright built a log cabin nearby on a tract of land first granted to George Beale by William Penn in , and stayed for more than a year. The area was then known as Shawanatown.
